The recently concluded Synchronised Vulture Survey 2024 in the Moyar valley indicates a rise in number of birds
Moyar Valley:
- Location – It extends from Gudalur through the core area of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.
- Significance – The valley is an important biome in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve
- Known for – Sheltering the critically endangered Gyps Vultures
- Important Vulture species of Moyar Valley – White Rumped vultures, Long Billed vultures, Red Headed vultures, and Egyptian vultures.
Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve:
- Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – 1st biosphere reserve in India established in the year 1986.
- Location – Western Ghats
- States covered – Parts of Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
- Includes – Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur National Park, Nagarhole National Park, Mukurthi National Park and Silent Valley
- Known species – Asian elephants, Indian bison (gaur), and the Nilgiri Tahr
Mudumalai Tiger Reserve:
- Location – Tamil Nadu.
- At the tri-junction of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- Shares boundary with – Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala) on the West and Bandipur Tiger Reserve (Karnataka) on the North.
- Moyar River – Moyar river flows downstream into the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
- Acts as the natural line of division between Mudumalai and Bandipur Sanctuary.
